Spilling the Tea on our Branding Journey
Why “Spill the Tea”
The name Spill the Tea comes from two ideas. First, Rachael Keefe is studying herbal medicine with Dr. Aviva Romm. In that work, healing often comes in the form of tea. It’s a simple, consistent, ancient and yet evolving practice of care and reconnecting with the wisdom of nature.
That metaphor carried naturally into this spiritual direction practice.
Then as most readers know, “spilling the tea” also means telling the truth. And it’s in unmasking that part, the truth, where the work of spiritual direction happens. This can be especially necessary for those things that tend to be left unsaid.
Therefore here, Spill the Tea becomes an invitation to share yourself freely in the presence of someone who listens alongside you for the sacred wisdom that may be emerging.
Why this Logo
The logo shows a blue teacup (cerulean blue #007BA7), a color that evokes stillness and depth.
The tea is rising not in the shape of a sea swell but of a breaking wave, spilling onto the saucer in mocha brown (Pantone’s Mocha Mousse #A47864). And while the wave is breaking, and spilled tea may be messy, the beach has always been sacred ground to Rachael. Peace can be found amidst all that the storms churn up.
That’s why this spill is messy but not a mess. And it’s like what happens when oceans move and the seas swell, because waves will crest and break. The logo reflects that kind of motion, a metaphor for the experience in spiritual direction at Spill the Tea: presence, attention, trust, and liberation, complete with beach hues and messy metaphors. Spill the Tea!
That’s a bit of the background that went into the design work here. I’m Erika Sanborne, and I took the lead on branding for Spill the Tea. If you have questions, Rachael welcomes them. You may also want to read About Spiritual Direction at Spill the Tea.
